i have a black 94 vw and i see so many swirl marks and minor scratches. can somebody give me some tips to remove the swirl marks? i bought some 3m swirl remover and the mr clean auto dry to clean my car, but from reading some posts i think i might return the mr clean. can u guys recommend something to wash the car. Also can somebody recommend a 1 step wax. i`m going to be doing everything by hand and i don`t have the funds to dish out for a polisher. I don`t know a whole lot about detailing so try to keep it as simple as possible and i`m from toronto, Canada so not all products are available here.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome fellow Canadian, I would suggest Eagle One Wet Car Wash, a good wash mitt, and two buckets (one for water/soap mixture and the other for rinsing mitt). Also, there`s a nice big blue Simoniz MF towel that I use for drying. These products can be purchased at your local Canadian Tire. Since I can`t evaluate your car`s finish, I would suggest claying and I am guessing you might need something with a little more bit for swirls...I would suggest calling a local paint/body shops for Meguiars DACP and use that along with a terry towel (since you don`t have a PC) and then following it up with 3M SMR. You could follow up with Meguiars NXT Wax (it might be available at CT also). There`s more products showing up in Canada, thanks to eshine.ca and Carcaresmart.ca (you might want to check these websites out).

Hmm, Maybe I should raise prices? :)

PS, who is CMax?

Chris, CMAX is part of NAPA Canada (I think, deals with automotive paint)...here`s a link: http://www.uapinc.com/client/en/pieces-auto/CMAX.html

P.S. Any chance you`ll be getting some Clearkote Vanilla Moose? There`s a lot hype around here when used w/Poorboy`s EX-P. Thanks!

3M SMR is too difficult to use by hand. SMR`s won`t do anything to swirls. You`ll need to do as bboy850 suggested and work DACP (dual action cleaner polish) with a terry towel and then follow it up with Meguiar`s #9 or #82 and then top with your wax of choice. You might want to break up the task over several weekend sessions, since what you describe sounds like a challenge even for a PC.

as for waxes, i`d suggest sticking with a pure wax if you use #9, since #9 will aid slightly in hiding swirls and hazing from DACP. The glazing effect, which is crucial to one who is working by hand (except for very few experienced detailers such as Scottwax), would be removed by cleaner waxes. Some pure waxes that come to mind are Meguiar`s #26 and #16, and Mother`s Pure Carnauba. P21S and S100 also work nicely but it seems that they are difficult to find for canadians. =/

Actually S100 is relatively easy to purchase, as it the rest of the S100 line...call up a local Harley Davidson dealership or any motorcycle dealership, they should have it in stock. Meguiars #16 has been discontinued in Canda but eshine.ca seems to carrying a limited amount.

Don`t forget the clay. For your `94, it`s probably the most important. Crappy Tire carries Mothers for $24.95 (with Quick Detailer included).

Buy a Porter Cable 7424 orbital polisher.

Check with Chris Pace at www.e-shine.ca for Poorboy`s SSR3 and SSR1 for swirl remover.

The first thing you should do is click the "learn" button at the top of this page and read all the articles.

Next, you should go to the "Hall of Fame" forum and read all of those.
