Need some enlightenment

Can someone tell me what is the difference between pearl metallic (PM), pearl (P) and metallic (M) paint?

I can`t be completely certain but I think pearl powder is used in clearcoats while metallic flakes are used in the color coat. A pearl metallic would be both.
