Pad Particles

What happens when particles come off of the pad, is this just dried wax residue or what. I have been storing my pads in water to keep them clean.

When does this happen ? I will get particles normally on hi speed with my PC, but only after i have used the pad over several times. (Megs pads btw) Then i toss them.....I get about 2-3 uses per polishing pad.....
