Hello,

Ive been doing alot of reading about the pc 7424 and am very interested in getting one. I know a velcro backing plate is better than the one that comes with it. So do i buy this pc and then find a velcro backing plate somewhere or do they sell the 7424 with a velcro backing plate already attached? Also what if i dont get a velcro backing plate, will it be hard to interchange pads? Ive heard alot about yellow and white pads as well, what do the different colors stand for, what do i use yellow for and what do i use white for? Sorry about all the questions but there is just so much to learn. I have used the search function but my questions have not totally been answered. Also i know there is a 5" and 6" velcro backing plate, what is recomended for a 6.5" standard size pad?

thanks again to everyone in advance!

Jim

From the sound of your question you haven`t read The Definitive Porter Cable Polisher and Accessories Thread (http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14421). Great place to start plus there is a link in that thread to an article written by GeekySteve that is also helpful when starting up with the PC. There are also links to Coastal Tools` PC information page too.

I prefer to use the flexible 5" hook and loop backing plate with 6-6.5" pads, but if you purchase the 7424 from Coastal you`ll get the 6" h&l plate also or the 7336 from Detailers Paradise. I got my polisher at Coastal Tool (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/a/port/pr7424.htm?L+coastest+zsvw5492ffd86ed8+1085911823) . Another couple of good place are Detailers Paradise (http://www.detailersparadise.com/_System/_AdvancedStore/ProductDetail.asp) and Autopia Store (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?autopia+ufAdJU+dual-action-polishers.html+).

good luck :)

You may also want to check Amazon.com before you buy. Believe it or not, they seem to have pretty good prices on the 7424 (who would have guessed a bookstore would sell detailing products).

I bought my setup (PC & plate and pads in one kit) from Autopia and was very pleased with the service and delivery. Also heard great things about PAC, who also handle them.

I would be careful about Amazon.com. From what I understand, the items sold on Amazon are seconds or even factory rebuilt units. I bought my pc on online somewhere, I can`t remember the site, but about a month ago I bought one from a local pawn shop for $35 and it looked like brand new. I now have a spare!!!

From 4DSC`s "Definitive PC Thread"

Model 7424 polisher includes 5 inch counterweight, 6 inch polishing pad 54745

Model 7336 sander includes 6 inch counterweight, 6 inch sanding pad 16000

No, the 7424 isn`t packaged with a 6 in. H&L backing plate, but if you purchase it from Coastal Tool they include one plus the 6 in. counterweight. You can purchase backing plates from any of the detailing vendors that sell the PC on their sites. If you purchase the 7336 you will receive a 6 in. "sanding pad" which is the hook and loop pad. You can also check Lowe`s for the 7336, several have gotten them there for $109.

I think the PC7336 package from DetailersParadise would be a good choice - it has everything you need to get started, including a selection of 1Z polishes. If I remember correctly they offer free shipping also.

Velcro is the same as "hook & loop" or "sanding pad."
