Spray gun recommendations?

Thinking of painting my car myself. What`s a good HVLP gun to use that`s reasonably priced?

An HVLP system good enough to paint your car would cost a lot more than a great paint job.



If you`re thinking of DYI, get a DeVilbis. You can make your own spray booth with roll plastic, 2x2s a large heater filter and a big fan. You will end up wet sanding the final finish, but who cares?



Use DuPont Imron (waterborne polyurethane co-polymer) or Centari (versatile acrylic enamel system) with the hardener. I don`t recommend PPG paints for the DYI job.

I also recommend a Devlibiss. I baught an Devilbiss"OMX" HVLP gun off ebay and painted my 68 Roadrunner. I used Dupont "Chroma Base" and Chroma clear" (Base coat/clerar coat). I wish I had put a few more coats of clear. I wet sanded through the clear where there was a drip in the basecoat. Oh well. The paint was also a metallic (I got "zebra" stripes on the roof the first time). I had to turn up the air a little then resprayed. I think it came out pretty well.

For a compresser, I used a Sears "Professional" series portable. The tank wasnt big enough and the compressor kept running while I sprayed. I put TWO water traps to catch the moisture and it worked out well.I also put a fan blowing on the comp. to try and keep it cool. WHen air is compressed it will heat up. As the air cools as it goes into the tank then down the air line on the way to your paint gun, condensaion forms.

SO..... try and get as big a compressor as yuou can find/afford.

You will need a minimum ~12 cfm compressor to keep up with the volume demands of a HVLP.



Please, please, use a positive air system for breathing, the 2 part urethanes contain isocyanates, and Imron can KILL you after even 1 car painting job, if you breath it freely. There is no OSHA approved respirator for isocyanates. No paintwork is worth your life or lungs.



DuPont has a new isocyanate- free clear, but it`s very $$$.
