cleaning a headliner

Is there any way to clean a headliner in a vehicle without wrecking it? (dirty from smoke, liquid spills, etc) I`ve been told by some that you shouldn`t get it wet because it might cause the liner to lose its ability to hold. Is it wise to vacuum it or is this to powerful for the liner?
