I had to resort to steel wool (and a brass brush in areas). On a whim, I tried oven cleaner...it didn`t touch it. Only Mean Green and Orange Clean even came close to making a mark.

The final touch was NXT followed by #16.

Plus a brass bristled brush for the indents in the spokes and a few really bad areas.

was the rim black from a busted cv boot or is it just years of brake dust and dirt?

Just curious because I have a couple of rims caked in black grease from a blown cv boot and I was wondering what a good way to clean them was.

That`s 50,000 miles of brake dust. A good degreaser (Simple Green, MEan Green, Orange Clean etc) should work fine for your grease problem.

The pics are gone it seems. However, have you ever tried Eagle A2Z wheel cleaner? I`ve spent time scouring nasty wheels myself, and then learned about this stuff.
