Ok, I`m about to start polishing the bumpers and areas below the side mouldings, and I would like to remove them to make polishing and cleanup easier. Also, they are textured and wax gets stuck in them like nobody`s business, so I want to clean them separately. I`ve looked on google and on the bmw forums I visit, but I can`t seem to find clear instructions on how to take them off. Has anyone with an e36 ever done this?

You just have to pull them. You will most likely break most of the clips, so go buy more from your dealer(they are very cheap).

It is easy to figure out while you are doing it. Took me maybe 10min to get all of mine off, and like an hour to get em put back on properly.
