Lots of people here use those little round foam applicators.
Terry cloth apps work well too. You can use a microfiber app or even a 3"x5" kitchen sponge as an app.
Apps come in all sizes and shapes. Find one that you like and buy a bunch. For most uses I like the round terry cloth apps sold at Pep Boys.

~One man’s opinion / observations~
I use foam applicators for polish/wax as it helps to apply a super thin layer, the foam applicators that are sold on this site (Handi-Grip Foam Applicators ) are the best (for me anyway) I’ve found thus far.
~Hope this helps~

I use Megs foam applicators for hand work (the yellow ones) and have just got some of the autopia applicators mentioned by TOGWT.
For polish application you could also try a folded terry towel as these are more aggresive. I tried this with reasonable results following advice from Scottwax.
You can also buy MF & terry applicators. Most of the places which stock your wax & polish should also have applicators available too.
