I keep on hearing the term orange peel, yet I have no idea what it is. Can someone please enlighten me?

Thanks!

I`ll see if I can find a pic - but it is a rippling in the finish - kind of like an orange peel in appearance.

It is basically the term used to describe a paints finish that has the surface texture similar to an orange, not perfectly smooth. Scottwax posted a great picture of a Mercedes that you could really see the orange peel, but the image is no longer available.

have you ever looked at the side of a car and noticed a ripple type effect? I guess a good way of explaining it is the texture looks like an orange peel(the outside of an orange)

Gotcha. Is there any way to minimize orange peel? Thanks again!

You can remove the orange peel with wet sanding and compounding.

Too much work IMHO for just removing the orange peel. I have a corvette Z06 and every corvette owner complaints about this orange peel so I decided that the orange peel will be the corvette trade mark. :lol

Actually, I`ve never seen a Porsche without it. I`ve heard Bentley paint is perfect, though. ;)

OR a new caddilac (CTS and SLR I believe). I read somewhere that after each panel is painted individually, they are immediately laid down flat so as to minimize any running, unevenness/orange peel during the drying process

So orange peel would be considered somewhat "common"? Something warrenty would not cover on new car? Also, no offense but what would a "high end" VW be called?I assumed all VW`s were "affordable" to the average joe. Thanks for the pics they helped me alot to see exactly what O.P. is

Do a search for the Bentley Scottwax details, that`s no orange peel.

VW`s affordable to everybody, I wish :)

They`re actually pretty pricey for each class they`re in.

Go onto a car site and build a Jetta and you`ll be surprised on how expensive they can be, then build a Passat with all options and watch it skyrocket.

Then spec a Touraeg, damn expensive.

Good thing they all have good paint jobs! :D

Best paint I ever saw - contest between a McLaren F1 & Jag XJ220. Saw both firsthand at a private garage. Other than that, could choose between numerous restored classic & vintage cars running into the millions of pounds value.

I have such a tough job - getting paid to go visit people who restore, race prep and fettle old and special cars!
