Interior Wood Trim

Anyone had experience restoring interior wood trim? Car is 1971 Mercedes Benz 280SE 3.5 Convertible with burlwood trim. Wood has faded and is rough to the touch. No delamination, however.

There are a couple of companies that specialize in this, but I don`t want to spend $2,500 - $3K.



Any advice is appreciated.

I am thinking out loud here, I wonder if you could remove the wood trim and sand them smooth then take them down to a body shop and have them spray a clear coat on them.

The burlwood isn`t thick -- it is a thin wood laminate over a base piece. If you sand it, you could easily sand right through the laminate, which would ruin it. You might be able to get away with a very fine sandpaper, and then carefully brushing on a polyurethane coating.



Maybe there are replacement pieces available? If so, I think that would cost considerably less than 3K, and would be easier to deal with.

Why not polyurethane in a spray can. Spray on a couple of coats let dry wet sand with 1000 grit paper apply more polyurethane let dry and sand again. Do this 3 times and finnish wet sand with 2000 gri, polish with 3m rubbing compound , then 3m smr and then hand glaze. Seems like a lot of work . IT IS

Madera Concepts in California specializes in refinishing Mercedes Wood Trim. I know they don`t cost nearly as much as mentioned above. If your interested email me and I will send you their info.



Just a note: I haven`t used them but know a few friends that have and they`ve been very satisfied with the results.

Try some airgun/firearm forums...refinishing/restoring stocks. The same technique may apply?
