Learning lots of great tips from all of you Autopians. Thanks to you all however, my obsessive compulsive brain is now going off in strange tangents. For example, I`m wondering if any of you have taken the "CD scratch test" beyond MF towels and tested other things like glazes, polishes, and clay bars to see what sort of effects occur.

Sorry, but I say the CD test is crap. I`ve had Zaino 100% cotton applicators scratch it. You can get anything to scratch it if you look hard enough in bright enough light.

Not to mention that a CD is not a comparible surface to automobie paint to test with. So what if Product A scratched a CD? That product may never come close to scratching a car which has a much harder surface than a CD. All that tests like that will show you is which product is more abrasive on a CD. It won`t show you which product is more abrasive on a car.

I use it as a reference point; it gives me an idea of whether or not something contains abrasives.

I use a "control" sample on the CD; for example, if I`m testing waxes for abrasives, I`ll find a towel that doesn`t scratch the CD, rub it on 1/2 the CD "dry" and then use the same towel to apply product to the other 1/2. I`ll then make comparisons between the two.

By itself, the CD might not be very valuable, but when used properly it can be helpful in shedding light on certain things.

Steve has a point. If you follow a careful procedure you will get meaningfull results....typically the relative abrasiveness of a product but not actually what it will do to a car`s finish.

As an alternative, I could always get out the painted boat propeller again.....lol .....ahhhhh those were the days......

NOOOOOOOOO! NOT THE PROPELLER! :D

Ahhh, the good `ole days. When we could discuss, theorize, debate, slam, praise, and review products without turning a thread into a 200 page debate/feud about credibility, credentials, agendas and all things not detailing related..... :( *sniff*
