Newbie here...wondering what folks think is the best group of products to use on the exterior of a black Porsche. It is a daily driver and I live in Seattle.

Thanks,

John

A lot porsche owners on this forum like Pinnacle Souveran.

p21s or souveran, no doubt about it. Some people like the zaino look but I`m not one of them. I detailed a black carrera cabriolet not too long ago. I used p21s gepc and wax and the wet look just amazes me everytime.

I am seeing alot of good mention of Souveran...however I am liking the durability of Blackfire or Platinum. Is it just not worth it on net?

Its also all depends on the "look" you want to go for...do you want the deep wet lost in a dark pool look...do you want the candy saranwrap look of zaino? Or something inbetween? Many people like different things all we can offer is product recomendations...the rest is up to you....i dunno who said this but it was on this forum...it went something like detailing is 90% prep work and 10% final product; i couldn`t agree more.

since it`s a daily driver, it may not work for you as well, but in terms of the best looking method for black, I like clay, Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion, then Pinnacle Souveran. Zaino is too shiny on black, IMHO, but it is MUCH more durable.

I think if you use poorboy`s ex after the p21s and before the wax it is supposed to be better yet.

jstephanus,

I have a jet black BMW and I currently use Poorboy`s EX sealant topped with Souveran wax.

The EX can be used alone for a great look, (Deeper and wetter than most sealants). I prefer to topp 3 to 5 layers of EX with Souveran.

Here are a couple of pics with 3 layers of EX topped with Souveran.

OK. Here`s the deal. I HAVE an `01 black Porsche. <a href=http://pages.sbcglobal.net/gheumann/zaino_test/>I have tried Zaino. Don`t care for it.

I`ve written several threads on this board pertaining to dealing with a black car. Feel free to search. It is a pain in the butt - but never has it been more important to understand a LOT more than you ever did before. The car has been the best teacher I ever had. If you don`t know what a microfiber wipe is, or where swirls come from, or think a California Water Blade is "OK", or what "diminishing abrasives" are, how to use them properly and the costs of not doing so, etc - trust me - whatever wax you use will not prevent you from having a badly swirled car in a very short time. Read up on this board, lots of good info. A few links in the "detailing" section of my site (http://www.heumann.com/) - some of which point back here.

With all that said, when it comes to waxes, I LOVE Souveran. Believe it is the best.

While my picture can`t compare to Greg`s, here is what Souveran looks like on a black 1988 Porsche. Not too bad for a 15 year old car, original paint. BTW, I`ve used Greg`s procedure, he has it down as in evidenced by his pictures.

What good is all that "durability" when you have to polish out swirls somewhere every 4 or 5 washes anyway?

1. My experience is that the polymers actually swirl EASIER than the paint itself - Klasse is particularly bad at this. So they look lousy after every wash (Klasse "mars" just from drying!) - unless of course, you use the magical "carnauba topper".

2. All the polymer fans say they really don`t look that good until you have several layers, and oh, by the way, then you might want to top them with a carnauba. But - once you have some swirls, you have to polish, whic of course removes everything. Now you have to build up 6 layers of Zaino all over? You weren`t even through the 1st one.

3. But wait, there`s more. Suppose you want to replenish whatever polymer has worn off - but you CAN`T if you topped with carnauba, because you have to strip the carnauba - at which point you`re going to strip most if not all of the polymer too. Start all over.

So while they put on their 6 coats of Z and a carnauba topper, I put the carnauba on straight away. Car looks great, wax lasts plenty long enough, and I get to go DRIVE.

Where I come from, all the polymer effort translates to "OY! Such a mischegas! Who needs this tsirrus! They must be meshugina."

It takes me less than 20 minutes to put a coat of Souveran on the Porsche, AND buff it out. I see NO reason to bother with polymer on black. If I cared enough to polish and wax my wife`s silver car, I would happily build up a few layers of Zany-o and then let it go for a year or two with no further attention from me. That would be more attention than it has ever gotten, and, fact is, more than it will ever get.
