Yesterday I striped the hood of my car, cleaned it and polished with SMR for dark colors.

After the prep, it was glossy and with a very good depth already. What I did was dividing it vertically in 4 sections and applied as per instructions the following sealants: (I`ll say in random order)

Platinum UPC + UPP

Poorboy`s EX

Moose Wax

Vanilla Moose Wax + MW

See if you find any difference (pics are tricky, I know)

Sorry for the size, but it`s better visible like that.

Lynn, I was doing tests with waxes, not looking at details on this one. Those holes are from the windshield wash sprays I removed to work better the hood.

If anyone wants to take a good look at the pics, on the first and second some separations are visible.

Take your shoots, tomorrow, after washing I`ll post my thoughts.

Didn`t wash it. It has rained all day! beads are identical on all sections.

So, I`ll post my first impressions, from yesterday.

As I said before, I applied all products as instructed to.

After preparing the surface with DACP and 3M SMR Dark Colors;

EX - w/ MF damp applicator, easy on. Buffed off after 30 min, easy off.

UPC+UPP - Cleaned the surface first w/ UPC which was let to haze a couple of minutes, buffed off and then UPP w/ foam applicator, easy on. Buffed after 1 hour, easy off.

MW - direct on the surface, like the EX. Application w/ a foam, removal w/ a MF cloth, easy on, easy off.

VMW+MW - Same process for both, application w/ foam applicator followed by removal with MF cloth. Easy on, easy off.

Ease of use: (based on easy on, easy off and time spent to complete)

1st - MW

2nd - VMW+MW

3rd - EX

4th - UPC+UPP

My impressions on the looks:

EX - Very reflective, darkened the surface a little, good depth.

VMW+MW - Very reflective, darkened the surface a little, good depth.

UPC+UPP - Very reflective, darkened the surface more, very good depth.

MW - Very reflective, didn`t darkened the surface, didn`t add depth, just bright.

The touch

Couldn`t tell the difference between them, they were all very slick.

First Conclusions:

The more a product darks the surface, the more perceptible is depth, at least it`s what happened with this four comparisons. This is visible in the 2nd pic, on the midle of the hood, left side is darker.

After driving the car for some hours, I also noticed that the UPP had more dust than the others, could be the oils it left on the surface, this is why I wanted to wash the car before posting any thoughts.

I`ll keep you posted.

jgv, how does all the above compare to einszett? (I noticed you had Glanz Wax and other 1z goodies from another post)

Glanz Wax is a liquid, like watter wax. It`s the easier to use of all. Provides a great smooth and bright finish.

I think that the one closer to it is the Moose Wax. Can`t compare the durability, though.

For those who care, I`ve washed it today, with my favorite Einzsett Rain Dance Shampoo (makes the Sonax that I also have look like TW) and my last impressions are:

The sections where UPP and VMW+MW (next to MW alone) still looked a little darker, but under sun daylight, one that didn`t know of this test wouldn`t see a difference.

I have my conclusions, I`ll stop this testing now and tomorrow I`ll make the hood even, I`ll clean it with 3M SMR DC followed by GEPC and... EX. (could be VMW+MW also, though if it was dark blue or black would be UPP and if silver it would have MW).

jgv-seems you`ve found good combinations for a variety of colors. Nice work!

I`ve found more than that, I`ve found that as long as you like what you do and know how to do it, there are no horrible products. The products I have (and they are a LOT) are all great, some for this others for that, but I like to use them all.

My hood looked very good with each of them, as it did without them or it does now, with GEPC and EX ;)

If you`re using 3mSMR DC, do you really need, or recieve any real benefit from using P21 GEPC?

I have some UPP & some Poorboys EX that I am going to use on a black Audi and a black Acura MDX. I want to make sure I prep correctly and right now I was thinking 3m SMR followed by AIO or Platinum paint prep finished with PUPP.

For the Poorboys side, I was thinking 3mSMR followed by EX, but then I have a bunch of products I could use if another step would really make a difference attempting to get the ultimate shine:

#7 or #9

IHG

Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner

AIO

I guess I don`t see why another step would be neccessary before the EX but I would like to hear otherwise if someone has some experience to prove me wrong.

Sam,

For what it is worth, I use GEPC after prepping with SMR before protecting paint with EX. Since GEPC is so easy to use and the final surface is slightly slicker I like adding this step. :wavey
