Has anyone ever used "petroleum jelly" to treat the rubber door seals, trunk seals etc. ?

No, but it might be worth doing a search. I use Gummi Phledge from BMW - great product.

Years ago I used Vaseline on rubber. It left a greasy sheen but doesn`t offer any protection. If I remember rightly, the seals on cars are made of EPDM ( I think that is the right acronym?) that may be damaged by petroleum products. Either way, I use 303 and it makes vinyls and rubber look like new while protecting it.

I like 303 for this type of application. The versatility of 303 on all types (not just auto) of leather, vinyl, and rubber is why I bought a gallon of the protectant. That should carry me into the next millenium.

I second the 303 for rubber seals. I picked up a 1 inch foam paint brush and literally paint the 303 on. I purchased the large size @ Cheapest Place To Purchase (http://www.campingworld.com/browse/products/index.cfm?prodID=1941&src=SRCH&tcode=37) .

I have not used petroleum jelly. But I do use Zymol Seal.

Longest term experience is with a `94 Dakota truck, started using Seal in `97. Today, the seals are soft as butter, no cracks, no abrasion. They look very very good, and feel soft.

Seal seams expensive, $17, but lasts a long time. I use it on several vehicles twice per year, and have 1/2 a bottle left.

I think this is a great product for rubber seals around doors and windows.
