New Car Smell?

I was wondering what`s the best way to keep the new car smell?



Have any of you used a good air freshener that really smells like new car? If so which brand?

I`ve found that just by keeping the interior clean keeps the "new car smell" around for a while. I`ve had my car for over a year and it smells new, although not as strong as when brand new.



None of the "new car smell" air fresheners smelled good to me... just don`t put stinky things in your car :D

That smell is actually the vinyl upholstery/dash/door trims` vapors evaporating from the car...



The only ways for you to "keep" that odor (it`s not a scent hehe, it`s actually being argued upon right now that it may be hazardous) are:



- Keep your windows closed as often as possible

- Don`t use air fresheners or strong cologne/perfumes

- Don`t introduce any strong odors into the cabin, especially food and smoke.

- Clean up dirt as much as possible.

- Keep the interior away from UV as long as possible (parking in shade, etc).



My brother in-law`s CRV is a daily driver and the car has been almost 3 years old, the odor is still there... faint, but still there.

I always think the "new car smell" is odd. Unless the car has leather, it usually smells like crap (with leather, it smells like that stuff plus leather). It smells like carpet glues and melted plastic or something. I always thought it was strange it was a desired smell. But some rubber/vinyl protectant, some carpet cleaner, and some leather conditioner will have your car smelling and looking new without smelling like glue.

If you have leather, try using Leatherique 2-3 times a year. It opens the pores on the leather when you clean and condition it. When the pores are opened they release that nice new leather smell. Unlike Zaino Leather in a Bottle, which has the scent added to the product, Leatherique is all natural and works wonders...

How do you get natural oil from leather, which is a hide? The smell of fresh leather, as I understand it, comes from the tanning process. There are two ways to tan: European cars typically dip the skins in vats, while US and Japan manuf`s use a spray process.



What I find interesting about LIB can also be used on vinyl and plastic, where Leatherique and Lexol may not.

Ozium makes an awesome New Car Smell that has always pleased me. New car smell is a combination of carpet glue, new fabric and whatever they treat the plastics with. The smell mixes up a few other scents that are only going to be present durring the manufacturing of a car. To replicate that smell is every car owners dream I would imagine. Ozium has come the closest to any scent I`ve ever smelled. Its availible at just about every AutoZone and PepBoys I`ve ever been to. Its worth trying if you haven`t yet. :up

actually the plastics smell comes from plasticizers (sp?), which is also why in newer cars you get that "hazing" on the inside of your windows (from the plasticizers escaping all the dash plastics/vinyl- also what smells) and after the new car smell is gone you don`t get much/any hazing anymore. ;)

Ever sit in a BMW on a hot day with the windows closed and the air off? They have a distinct scent. "Click and Clack" (on Car Talk on NPR) discussed it for about an hour, and said it comes from a combination of the leather and the glues used.



Even a 10 year old BMW still has that unique scent, as BALTIC will attest.

I`ve seen it in Target and Wal-Mart too. Check around. Its a small cylinder about 4 or 5 inches tall with a white cap. They hang it with the rest of the air freshenors. I`ve seen it online, but never at a price that made it worth ordering. Its hard to come by. I believe Meda (or Medo. I can`t ever remember) makes it. Hopefully that will narrow down your search. Any Ozium product is pretty awesome from what I`ve experienced of them. I smoked in my car for 3 years without anyone noticing thanks to Ozium. :xyxthumbs
