I`m looking at ordering a PC from coastal tool and noticed they bundled the 18002 backing plate, which is flexible. I know griot`s uses the 18001, which is a stiff plate. I spoke with the guy at coastal who said he would substitue the 01 for the 02 if I wanted. Does anyone have an opinion on which is better? :nixweiss

I`m happy with the stiff 18001.

How flexible is the 18002? I think I`d rather the pads conform to the car`s surface rather than the backing plate bending.

Somebody care to shed more light?

I asked this same question on the pc chat a few weeks back. The overwhelming response was the Contour Pad (18002). But I had the feeling that my question was being misunderstood - buffing pads vs. backing pads. I find both backup pads acceptable but lean toward the contour pad - better overall feel.

I would watch which size buffing pads you use though. Personal feelings are that a 6.5 inch buffing pad on a 6 inch backup pad does not provide enough clearance to protect you from touching the backing plate in tight areas.

Sorry, I have no idea, but here`s what they look like if it helps:

Just your standard usual orbital sander backing pad, really. With holes for the sander`s vaccum attachment.

A wierder looking pad. Never seen or felt one in person before.

The Coastal Tool package is not something I am familiar with at all, but $109 plus tax buys a PC 7336 with a screw-on foam pad at Lowe`s. Another $20.22 plus tax bought a Meguiar`s W64DA hook & loop backing plate at the body supply store. $25 got me 2 polishing pads and 1 finishing pad from Meguiar`s web-site. The plate measures 5" in diameter and works quite well with Meguiar`s 6.5" pads. The 7336 comes with the 6" counterweight. May not be the answer for you, but it is another way to get started.
