View Full Version : Vr6 Vroom . . .

After about three months, I got my new Volkswagen GTI VR6. Of course it has not rained all summer long, and the day I got to get my car, it is pouring. Oh well, now, maybe I can actually wash my car, without having to worry about getting arrested ;) .
The VW rep was laughing as I began to pull the white plastic, that protects the car, off of the car. He said that he has never had anyone ever request to have the protective plastic left on the car. I told him that I am not just any customer, I am an educated and perfectionist driven car detailer.
He laughed again, and said, "hey, it is your car, you can do what you want."
Now here is the dilemma. The dealership had to pull off some of the plastic to get the pinstrips on the car. There are some goopy areas, that seem to have the glue from the plastic stuck on the paint. The VW rep gave me a can of 3M sticker remover. He said that it won`t damage the paint in any way.
Is this true? Can I use the product without any concerns about damaging the paint? How should I apply it? I think that I might spray it on, let it sit, and then use a MF to take it off. Let me know what you think.
I should have pictures be next week. Man, I can`t wait to leave work to go for a drive.
Best regards.

It`s safe. No problem. Apply it, wipe in one direction, repeatedly if necessary. You can spray it into a sponge and hold the soaked sponge against the surface to help saturate it rather than have it run down the side of the car.
I hope you remembered to take pictures of your care all covered in plastic. That`s soooo cool!!:bow
Best of luck with your new ride!

That`s awesome and so exciting. I hope you enjoy! Just got my Jetta GLI VR6, just wait till you get it to 4,000+ RPM, then you`ll really love that growl. I say this because I know you`re behaving yourself on breaking that puppy in. Just hit 1,000 miles today, time to have some real fun!

the snow is likely because he`s waay up in canada..... eh?
but anyways yeah being from a GM factory town I see plenty of cars in their "virgin plastic" on a daily basis during my to-work commute.

We get snow up in Canada.....these pics were taken earlier this year in Jan.
What I don`t understand about the "virgin plastic" is why only cover parts of the car? Why not all the major body panels. When I picked up my car after the dealer had removed the plastic & prepped the car,---
[ I know, I know.....should have had them leave all the plastic on the car, but this was before I even knew autopia existed. They managed to do a very half-assed job at the prep and it appeared they just did a quick wash & dry...no polishing or waxing, so minimal swirl marks were made.]
--- I noticed a faint line on my gas door because it was only half covered w/ plastic. At first I thought it was a flaw in the paint, but under closer inspection w/ some bright lights....I could see that the un-protected parts had very faint swirls/starches compared to the protected side. The difference tricks you into thinking there`s line flaws in the paint. :(

ding ding ding......we have a winner! :) I had to get the dealership to swap them out w/ the correct tinted GTI taillights. It`s a real mystery why it was like that. I had to mention it to the dealer before they even bothered to correct it for me. :down Maybe they thought I wouldn`t notice??
After an unfortunate service incident, I haven`t taken my car back to the dealership I bought it from.
