Was the old-school laquer black easier to deal with than the clear coats of today?

It seems that the clear coat serves as a magnifier of defects.

I am wondering if laquer with no clear coat was easier to make look perfect??

No, you are MUCH better off with a clear coat. It really does offer a lot of protection to the base color. Many of the same issues still apply, but in the end, clear coat is a better way to go and will produce a better more durable finish.
