8" Orbital - is this overkill for a newbie

I have some swirl marks on my car that has been there since day one from the dealership. I have never used a Orbital Buffer before but my brother, who`s a contractor has tons of tools.



I plan to use his 8" Fein . Will this be overkill for a newbie. While alot of autopians seem to use the PC, it`s the same unit, only much larger. Can this unit be used in such a manner, that it is "idiot-harmproof".
