Hello everyone,

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the useful info I`ve found while lurking the past week. I had no idea! This is my kind of site...lots of friendly and helpful people. Here is some more info about me:

27 years old, male (despite being mulva), recently married with 2 cats (Falcon 3, Hunter, 1), avid skier, hiker, now obsessed with the upkeep of my new WRX.

I will be doing my first ever exterior detailing this weekend. I don`t want to mess up too bad so I figured I`d tell you what I plan to do and any criticism or affirmations would be appriciated:) .

1. Dawn wash (dry?)

2. Clay with Pinnacle Poly ClayBar using E1 Wipe&Shine QD for lube.

3. Meguiars Gold Class wash w/ sheepswool mitt & dry w/ Absorber

4. Polish w/ Meguiars #7 w/ foam pad and buff w/ MF

5. Wax w/ Meguiars #26 liquid w/ foam pad and buff w/ MF

6. Admire work using Guinness Extra Stout

The part I`m confused about is the claying. Never heard of this before finding Autopia, and I`ve done some searches but none led me to a claying technique.

Thanks again.

Hi Mulva,

Welcome to Autopia. This place is by far the best on the internet for car nuts who love to take care of their rides. You are definitely in the right place.

I don`t know if you`ve seen them or had a chance to read them, but David Bynon, Autopia Mayor, has created several detailing lessons and tips, as well as his e-book, Autopia Guide to Detailing.

His lesson about claying is here:

http://www.autopia-carport.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11031&highlight=claying

The e-book is a terrific resource for detailing newbies. An updated version just came out. Have a look here:

www.autopia-carcare.com

Finally, one of the suggestion us old timers make to newbies is to use the SEARCH feature. With vBulletin the feature is very effective. The button is in the upper right of the screen just under the banner ad.

Again, welcome aboard.:wavey

Oh boy, another cat lover! We have 3!! ~ edit: cats, that is!

Welcome to the forum!! And congrats on your recent marriage.

I`ll second what bret said -- the e-book is a super resource to make sure you are doing everything right. (And as David B. stated on the front page, purchasing it supports the forum!)

Claying is pretty easy, and I think you`ll be pleased with the results, even on a new car. This is a link to another claying explanation (the first one I ever read before Autopia)DC Car Care on Claying (http://dccarcare.com/tipowk/tipowk8.html) . I`ve used Pinnacle and it`s very similar to the Erazer system that they are talking about on this link.

Be sure to post pics when you are through with your detail! Happy detailing!! :wavey

Thanks for the replies and links so quick!

Cats are the coolest, my two boys consistently crack me up.

Just got the e-book and that will probably consume the rest of my night.

Quickie question though, I`ve read on some posts of claying the windows. The e-book just mentioned the paint. What should I avoid claying if anything? Besides tires.
