My father-in-law`s beater is in sorry shape. The paint is heavily oxidized. I used some P21s paint cleaner, and it improved the car`s appearance dramatically. However, some oxidation remains. It`s time to break out the heavy artillery.

I bought some rubbing compound yesterday. I chose the rubbing compound because I don`t have a PC or a rotary (next month- my birthday present to myself!). I want a harsh abrasive that can be used by hand.

How does one use rubbing compound? Does anyone have any experience with it?

Just be very careful.

Make sure you have tried less aggressive options before you jump to the RC.

It can be very damaging in the hands of the inexperienced.

I agree with Demo, be careful and go slow. When I apply Rubbing compund, i like to apply it with an old terry cloth towel (makes no difference, as your scratching the surface anyway). I also ensure that the area is somewhat moist to ensure adequate lubercation, to allow the compund to cut slowly enough to control. Water or QD works well. Work one area at a time, it may be painfully slow, however if you dont want to do mroe harm than good it may be your only choice, IMHO. Best of luck!
