I`ve read the how to section and it says to dry in a straight line (back and forth motion), does this also apply to washing?

Welcome to the forum.
Horizontal panels should be touch in front to back motions.
Vertical panels in up and down motions.
This should go for washing applying wax/sealant and buffing.
The purpose is that any swirls possibly induced into the paint will be less likely to be seen under most lighting conditions.

When I dry I don`t even rub. I have found that blotting is just as fast as rubbing if you use a bath towel.

Washing is the most damaging thing most Autopians do to their paint. I say this because people here usually use clean very high quality microfiber or 100% cotton for buffing and drying, so washing is the only time you should be touching your dirty car.
I take a long time to wash, anywhere from 1:45 to 4 hours.
