I am thinking about getting a portable GPS unit for my car and I would mount it on the dash using velcro tape. Do you guys think this may cause permanent damage? I have a 2001 330i and the dash is vinyl. The GPS is small, so I shouldn`t have to use very much tape. Thanks.

1) does 3m make a removable adhesive velcro tape?

2) radio shack (I`m sure you could find it somewhere on the net) makes this rubberized stick pad that allows you to set cell phones, glasses, etc on your dash without slipping around (don`t know what your GPS looks like) with no sticky adhesive.

You didnt mention which GPS you have, but I would seriously consider another alternative unless your dash is a hard plastic. Check out the various cell phone holders available before resorting to velcro on a soft vinyl dash. Also consider other mounting positions. Speaking from experience, GPS screens are generally too small to drive safely and view when mounted on the dash. Mounted down near the shifter tunnel might be just as good of an option. Signals can still be received strongly if you have a decent GPS.

Don`t most the cell phone holders out there require drilling or velcro tape? I have been looking for a useable one for my Startac for a while, but am unwilling to drill holes in my dash area.

I didn`t realize that you could get a signal if the unit wasn`t on the dash. I am looking at the Garmin V which is one of their newest units so maybe I won`t need to mount it on the dash. It is very small also. I don`t want to take any chance of damaging my dash. I`ll check out that mounting stuff at radio shack and maybe some cell phone mounts. This board is GREAT!!! Thanks.

I use a Garmin 12XL, and have maintained signal with it just resting in the center console with no problems. Even at rest stops I have put in under the seat, while I was outside the car, and it still had a lock. Garmin has very good receivers.

do yourself a favor and suction it to the glass. Your only going to create issues if its on your dash. A good car audio place may have some install suggestions that won`t leave any evidence upon removal. I just don`t see a positive ending when you put fixed items on the dash. You will get fading on the dash that will be uneven where the gps was, you will mess with the integrity of the dash when you remove it, and you may cause further issues. best of luck!
