So, I get an email from a guy who wants a link on my site. Sorry... nobody rides for free! Here`s his link:

http://www.5starshine.com (`http://www.5starshine.com`)

Anyway, I did some research and found this in an old issue of Professional Carwashing & Detailing magazine, January, 1989, page 110.

"Dupont several years ago released a press statment about their trade mark product Teflon. In a nutshell, they said the Teflon added nothing to waxes or polishes as Teflon can and will only
bond to metal while heated to very high temps. Basically what they were doing was giving a disclaimer for all of the polished and waxes hitting the market making claim after claim about how
superior their product was just because it was supposed to contain Teflon. This came out about the time the debacle about PTFE resins and the Slick 50 product that also turned out to be a big farce."

Even Eagle One took there wax products with Teflon off the market. Who are these "5 Star Shine" people trying to fool?

New Teflon bonding process. Could this be true?

5 Star Shine uses a Patented Polarized Protection System (PPS).

This technology called electrophoresis dynamics is analogous to the "bar magnet" principle that opposite poles attract. The wash solution (polarizer) opens the pores of the paint and imparts a positive charge to it. The anionic Teflonテぐ (PTFE) is negatively charged and is thus pulled into the pores of the paint. Only Teflonテぐ formulated in an anionic aqueous solution can seal paint. Other forms of Teflonテぐ will have no effect.

5 yrs protection?! Come on now.........

I have been posting that teflon link for some time now with hopes of spreading the truth around to detailers on TEFLON. Good post DAVID.

David,

I think that company has another web site:
http://www.snakeoil.com (`http://www.snakeoil.com`) .... oh and this one too

Waxman, so are you saying that this product works? I`m no physicist, but IMO, bonding a protectant to an oppositely charged surface may work temporarily, but unless the wash solution makes the paint a SUPER strong cation and the Teflon is a SUPER anion and there is no dissipation of the charges over time, don`t you think one swipe of a soap filled wash mitt would remove the teflon?

There is no ionic bonding going on...maybe they are trying to describe STATIC in a fancy way....good...now my paint will pick up dust like a magnet......hehe

Thanks for the heads up. I LOVE debunking all these snake oil products. It just astounds me, not only that there are people who fall for this kind of stuff, but even more that there are people so unethical that they don`t mind selling it. How can people sleep at night selling fool`s gold?

the answer to every chemistry question ever is hydrogen bonding ;)

or sometimes van der waals forces, but that`s just in case hydrogen bonding doesn`t work :D

I was being sarcastic. I forgot to put a :). On a postive note, it is a an informative website though. On another negative, one of the pages has links to sites not suitable for all people.

Waxman,

oh!. my bad.

That word you used, "electrophoresis", took me back to my biochem days. Now those are days that I long for! (j/k). :)

I don`t know about the rest of you guys but I`m buying a carload of that radar absorbing wax. Hehe! How can these guys manage to claim crap like that. Laters.

NSXNEXT,

www.snakeoil.com I love it! I almost fell off my chair. I might have to go but that URL... too funny.

Well, if my memory serves me... not often... Teflon (of all variations) must be applied at very hight temp (700+ degrees???) to work as a coating.

Personally, if Dupont says it has no value as a car paint protection system, I trust them.
