what is the best protectant for them? Should I just use a sealant or is there something better?

Poorboys wheel sealant has been my go to for years.

The best thing iv`e found so far is White Diamond (surprisingly at advanced auto parts)
Here is my review of it.

has a sealant in it, & works very well.
I sometimes top with Blackfire Metal Sealant though, durability is really good.

I am with Colin on this. I picked up some White Diamond as well and it`s an amazing metal polish. I have always also used BF Metal Sealantl.

You can`t go wrong with either.

BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond Metal Acrylic Sealant works on protecting billet type aluminum, plated, anodized and/or clear coated wheels.

not sure but I need something - still looking - flitz says it leaves protections that lasts 2-3 months is that true?
