Who inspects their sponges and mitts when washing their cars? Last night I was almost going to take a comb and comb out any particles in my mitt. I pulled out little pieces in the sponge that I use. There`s got to be a better way.

When you say "sponge", exactly what type of sponge are you referring to?

inspect my mits each and every time i use them. I just purchased 2 wash mits from Tim at TACS and boy-o-boy are the nice and plush. One of the new TACS mits is about twice the size of the Viking mits i got from Wal-Mart. As for the sponges i use, I`m not to worried about them because I only use them on the tires with EF hi-intensity.

I always give them them an eyeballing and wash them often but when in doubt I either toss mine out or relegate them to underbody and grubby areas. I figure at 5-8 buck each I can toss them every few months.

You should always run water backwards (from the inside of the mitt) to flush out and straighten the fibers. I also machine wash the mitts every two or three car washings.
Never use sponges on the paint.

In regard to the use of sponges on paint, that was my thought as well. That`s why I had to ask what type of sponge he was referring to. Closed cell sponges only serve to act as sandpaper against the finish - but you already knew this. :)

I use a sponge for my windows. It`s the same sponge I used to use on my car before I moved to a higher Klasse. It must be a magic sponge cause back in the day I used it, it worked fine. But I was always meticulous in keeping it very clean. It didn`t scratch my car paint the for the first year I was using it for.
