Today was layoff`s at work and my wife`s too:pray:. So far we are safe. Our companies lay off thousands today and wanted these folks off their property by Friday. What a shame to do this 1 week before Christmas. Looks like a lot more of this is going on this week and next around the country.......

Tough situation.

I can see both sides of little or no warning it`s coming though.

During the last economic bump I was doing some consulting work for a fortune 500 co.
I watched them hold a meeting with 500+ executives in their auditorium. They informed them that as of that moment they were terminated/layed off. Tht each would be escorted to their office with a guard to get their personal property and then escorted off property. I was amazed at how callous it was, and said something to the people I was working with. They told me the logic behind it was that at this point in time any one of them could do some sort of damage to the company so it was better this way.
The damage could be either physical damage or to any of the projects they had access to.

Well, mine wasn`t done this week but 3 weeks ago. 34 yrs with the company and next thing you know they don`t need you anymore. It wasn`t a layoff but what they call a "reduction in force" meaning that they don`t want and will not hire you back!!

Too young to retire (only 52) so I guess I will have to start looking elsewhere after the holidays.

O well, just another day in paradise!!!

We were not on the chopping block today. But for some it wasn`t good news for them.

Bill

That bites big time...I saw the same thing happen with Agilent here locally some years back...only thing that helped these people they gave them severance packages

Very few got severance packages at all........

Yep, they gave us a severance which equated to about 5 months pay. Can`t complain about that(except they will take taxes off and it will really hit me come income tax time) because a lot of folks around here are only getting 2 to 4 weeks pay at some companies here in the area.

So I am better off than some, but I know my age is gonna be a problem when I start looking after the holidays. But I figure I will stay positive and do and get what I can to keep me till I hit 60 then all will be well - just have to watch my spending in the meantime, it will be an adjustment that I will have to get used to.

Unfortunately many places are closing their books at the end year, so they do "lay off`s" during the end of the year or near the end of a quarter. It`s something to do with the financials.
As for escorting people off that is a common practice as well. The hirer up on the food chain the more damage you can do ... pricing, customer base, current projects.

All those things can do severe damage to the company that let them go.
They do that to protect themselves.
