I see on Detailed Image`s website that Meg`s is coming out with a coating called Deep Crystal Paint Ceramic Coating M788. This product should be available by the end of this year (Late Dec 2019 or early January 2020), according to the posting at a pre-order cost of about $80. Eighty dollars is lot of money for the average car-care "Joe", but it is not out of the realm for a quality coating these days.

Guess it was only a matter of time before Meguiars joined the coating car-care market. Has any one seen anything about this or maybe its introduction? Was this introduced or featured at SEMA in Las Vegas this fall?? I am more curious about easy it is to apply and its look and what durability it is designed to have.

Some Autopian beta-tester knows something, but like all true beta-testers, is consigned to secrecy and confidentiality and cannot mention a word about it.

Lots of information on the Meguiar’s online forum about the coating and the other new products.

My take from that video they posted is that this isn`t going to be a retail product, I mean we`ll be able to get it from PBMG etc. etc., but you`re not going to see it at WalMart or Pep Boys.

Meguiar’s has had deep crystal overseas for years, it was a matter of making it 50 state legal and the public being educated on coatings.

I expect to be underwhelmed. What was Meg last game changer anyway? They are losing retail shelf space at a quick rate.

I am seeing apparently more TW at the shelf these days than Megs. Their new products better be winners.

I thought they said this was not really related to the overseas product?

The quote from Nick Winn at MOL:

"Completely different product than our coating available internationally, just similar branding."

At 1 year durability I don`t know how popular it will be. The kit includes other prep stuff and latex gloves but that won`t make a difference to most people, the durability will.

Pretty much. M205 is about the only Megs product I still use regularly.

They will do just fine. They have their maintenance topper which will also sell.

The fact that they developed it to avoid high spots is a big selling point since people seem to freak about a high spot.

It’s a similar stance as Sonax with their coating and they are doing just fine.

Back to topic:
It shall see what the M788 brings to the table. At one point they were selling M888 on Amazon which will out perform M788 in most aspects. I am curious about these new Hybrid Ceramic products (professional line). However, with TW selling their Hybrid Spray Coating for $16 for 16oz, it is a really hard deal to beat. Even more-so considering the success with SNS and chemical resistance. Lastly, I think I will be sticking with FK1000P as it is easy to remove from towels, as well as anything I would use to top it.

The numbers is confuseing with the Meguiars products. Meguiars Deep Crystal Coating M688 is the name of the coating over seas and the new M788 is the US coating. The Meguiars coating here in Sweden has been mostly used by detailing shops and car dealerships. If you google the M688 coating and look at the application video Meguiars has done. You see a different application than usually. It`s 4 layers without any leveling or buffing until the last layer has set on the paint. A little as some glass sealant applications where you apply the second layer directly over the slightly hazed first layer. The same method as with the M688 coating. I have been close to try out the Meguiars Top Coat M699 some times but has always been other products that caught my interest. So probebly the new M788 is more like a traditional full blown ceramic coating. But in some ways not as the durability of around a year is what you often get with the coating lite range of products. I would like to see it a little more stronger so you would get around 2 years durability from it. But maybe it`s very more user friendly and designed that way. On the other hand there are more people and detailing businesses that are used with the full blown coatings now. So a pro option to go with would have been nice I think.

Anytime in my opinion you make it so easy to use so the enthusiast has no problem, you decrease durability. Just read Adams spray coating label. But as stoops said, it makes it not such a chore to re do if you don’t like how it’s looking.

The coating market has become the sealant market from the past. I really think that with the exception of the higher end waxes, everything shortly will say something about ceramics.
