My girlfriend just bought a 1992 Volkswagen Jetta that had had the head gasket blow.

Degreaser. Lots of spray degreaser. NOT ON THE ALTERNATOR THOUGH.

Purple stuff or simple green will cut through the oil and grime, I`d mix it up 50/50. A pressure washer will help too. Just be careful and try not to blast the alternator, fuse box, etc. to much.

Castrol Super Clean cleaner/degreaser ("That Purple Stuff"). It`s available at discount stores, chain auto parts stores, etc.

I ment purple power. Its a heavy degreaser sorta like simple green. You can get it at your local advanced auto parts. Purple Stuff is a industrial strength degreaser that i get locally.

any industrial degreaser works wonders. Make sure you have a pressure washer handy too. As far as the alternator, you can get it wet, thats no problem, just don;t spray the degreaser on it liberally.

Also when you get the "big chunks" off, spray the degreaser again and take a stiff nuyon brush and loosen any gunk thats left. The spray it again let it sit for 3 minutes or so then pressure wash it off.

Another thing to watch out for, that might not apply you the VW, is spark plug wires and coil packs. Keep away from them with the water stream. If they get wet thats one thing, if you blast them good luck. Fords 4.6/5.4`s are known for this probelm, in fact I relaced one recently , blew the coil pack out ..

+1 It is easy to say what might work, but until we see pictures you are just going to get vague guesses. Show pictures and we can get a little more specific.

Formula 88 will get rid of anything with grease. You can get it at any car place.
