Hi All,
Well not the issues the wife talks about, but slug and snail issues. I have tried to get rid of some serious snail/slug slime trails that are all over the paint and glass on a recent acquisition. The slime is gone and the paint is smooth to the touch but it has visual left trail marks where the little buggers have been going for a walk all over the car. Amazingly it will not even come off the glass!, there remains a trail even after paint thinners (glass only) hot water, lemon, vinegar, window cleaners of various strengths, degreasers, salt water mix, even a medium cut polish, its still all over the car. I have researched the crap out of slug slime and know that its a protein and not acidic. Its properties are marveled at by scientist but no one has so far come up with a method or cleaning off the trails Anyone have any magical formulas to get rid of the slug trails?

Welcome but I`ve never seen that so I`ll be watching for any recommendations so if I ever have to cross that bridge I`ll be a head of the challenge

Wow. Never heard of slug trails before! Sounds awful. Any photos you can share?

Q: How did you apply the medium cut polish? By hand? Machine? Give us some more details on this part so we know exactly what you tried/ how we can help

I would suggest a chemical polish like Professional Polish (since your finish smooth already) like a bird dropping the PP can bring it out ..

basically a pure polish with no abrasive that can felt by hand ... can be used on any non-porus surface .. pad dependent ... from a paint cleanser to cutting after wet sanding with a wool pad and rotary ... sun or shade ...

If it is a protein I would try hydrogen peroxide on the stains, diluted 50/50 to start. Then polish it with Griots fast cut on a polishing pad.

I`ve tried a few compounds, some branded such as Meguiars (not Ultimate but the three stage, cleaner, medium and fine polish) with a variable speed buffer/polisher. Makes the paint look good but the trails are still there. I decided to try various interweb concoctions on the glass first as it is much harder than the paint. There are a lot of lemon/bleach/salt water/very hot water postings but i am reluctant to go the bleach (various strengths suggested) route unless its a last resort. Borax is another recommendation (anyone ever tried that?) What would anyone recommend for excessive dried on tree sap? That may be a similar challenge. Once the weather clears i am also going to try a clay bar approach. Its tough to get a picture of but i`ll try, cant be seen very well in sunlight but with a little bit of condensation it clearly looks like snails have been running the Indy 500 all over the car, even the brightwork shows the trail.

Some interesting slug slime facts:

Slug Slime has all the expected benefits for the slugs. Slug slime is actually made of a highly organized polymeric material that can absorb water extremely rapidly—up to 100 times its initial volume. It absorbs the water so fast that it`s almost explosive. So, you ask, how come slugs don`t soak up too much water and explode when the crawl across water? Well the slug cleverly packages up the dry mucus in granules, coating it with a layer of cell membrane material, thereby keeping it dry until it is ready to make slime. When the slug thinks it`s time for slime, the granule is broken open and whammo...Slime everywhere!

Another little known fact about slug slime is that not only does it deter predators by being gross and slimey, but it also numbs the tongue of anyone who dares taste it. Go ahead...try it. Slug Slime actually contains an anesthetic. This doesn`t keep everyone from eating slugs however. Shrews actually relish the slippery critters, and racoons roll slugs around in the dirt to give them a more palatable coating before eating them. My grandma swore that chickens and turkeys would eat slugs as well.

Scientists are very interested in the characteristics of slug slime. Researchers foresee numerous potential uses, such as pollutant traps for sewage treatment plants, effective water-based lubricants, and improved surgical implants and wound coverings. Slug slime is one of the best natural glues ever discovered and because it sticks especially well to human skin, doctors are studying slug slime to develop surgical implants that will stick to and be accepted by human bodies.

for tree sap 91 percent alcohol works, have you tried that? And the slug slime facts are bordering on too much info! LOL!
