Once a year I enter a judged show, an All-Chevy Charity Benefit Show sponsored by my employer. I use the event to justify the time invested in an annual paint resto of the OEM lacquer of my "survivor" `87 El Camino. This thing is an encyclopedia of paint defects, including checking, crazing, rids, chips and has been abused with a rotary and wool over the years, so aggressive products and processes are avoided. Earlier this year, I had won a tub of Poorboy`s Natty`s Black in a giveaway, so it was time to give it a try. My process involves multiple rubs and soaks with Meguiar`s #7, followed by light polishing, an app of Poorboy`s Black Hole Glaze then an LSP.
I had never tried a PB wax before, but the word was they were very user-friendly in high-temp and high humidity environments. That info was spot-on. We`ve had a run of hot, humid weather in PA, but the Natty`s doesn`t care. It goes on smooth, both by hand or machine and removal is a breeze, even on my old lacquer, which is very sensitive to streaking. I`ve also read that it tends to mute metallics and that may be true of BC/CC finishes, where the metallic is buried below a layer of clear, but I noticed no such effect on my single-stage paint. It did darken and richen the burgundy color ever so slightly as well as masking some of the many defects, a big plus on my old paint. While the gloss level was certainly very good and I took home another trophy, I wouldn`t put it on quite the same level as the expensive premium waxes, but at $29.99 for a tub and ridiculous ease of use, this stuff is definitely one of the best values going, at least IMO.
