So a couple weeks ago I was out at local carshow passing out cards and talking with people. A gentleman flags me over to have a look at his 1970 Nova. Overall the car was nice but it was very evident that it was in need of a good polishing. His main concern was some defects on the hood and trunk that had appeared.

Unfortunately those defects appeared to be solvent pop under the clear coat. After a brief discussion I told him to bring the car by to have some test spots done. After doing some test spots on the hood and trunk with different polishes and even a 3000 grit spot it was clear that the solvent pop could not be fully removed. I was however able bring back the clarity and lighten up the appearance of it. After some more discussion and educating he decided to have me damp sand the hood and trunk the complete a full compound and polish on the whole car.

So here we go!

Wash/decon

Mckees37 waterless wash on the go was used on the paint and wheels as they were only slightly dusty.
Paint decon with nanoskin medium pad/3401 and WG Uber Rinseless wash as a clay lube

After decon process

Machine compounding and polishing was handled using a various tools and size pads. My main go to was the G21 with a BOSS microfiber cutting pad and McKees 37 Fast cutting compound. Then finish polishing with the g21, yellow BOSS perfecting pad and BOSS perfecting cream.

EXCELLENT.

Did you do any work on the cowl? If so, what products/tools did you use? (cuz that`s a lot of "slots")

Great question. I did compound and polish the cowl as well. I did mask off the slots and polished around them. I used my Flex PE8 rotary with 2in pads for cutting then my GG 3in polisher for finishing.

justins00ss - Cool. Thanks for answering! (I`ve only done hand polishing on slots like that)

Great work, huge improvement. I`m sure the owner is really happy.

Q: Did the 3000 grit level the clear (reduce orange peel)? Because those reflections look really crisp.
