So, my grandpa died on Sunday. Retired Marine Corps captain, served for tours in Vietnam. He was always my hero. I grew up next door to him and always had a very close relationship, highlighted by Saturday morning trips to Jolly Pirate donuts. Grandma will be taking over his car moving forward. I wanted to get it spruced up for her while I`m in town.

This was by no means a "full" detail by Autopia standards. I just packed stuff for a basic wash and wax, and interior dressing. No buffer, polish or pads.

This car isn`t drive much, but goes up and down a gravel road every time it`s driven. It gets dirty quick. I had just polished with HD speed in August. A little swirling but not bad. There was a lot of paint chips and water spots, which I wasn`t equipped to deal with today. I`ll be back for all that this summer ;)

PROCESS:

I did a presoak with OPC while I did the wheels with WG Uber. Wheels weren`t bad at all, not much purple. I mixed up a strong batch of Citrus Wash for the initial wash, to bust up the grime and dirt. I did the first wash, diluted the soap, and washed again. Both were 2bm.

After drying, I cleaned tires with Tarminator and dressed with opti bond. Trim was dress with B2B.

I will do a full polish and coating this summer, but in the meantime I wanted to prevent any more water spots. I packed the Collinite 476, which will do well to provide 6 months of maximal protection.

As for the interior, it was in pretty good shape. I just did a quick vacuum, scrubbed the all weather mats, and a quick wipe down with OPC. Windows with Stoners, seats, dash and trim with PBL leather and vinyl coat. I love this stuff! I wiped the jambs down with OPC, as well.

Only complication I ran into was the cars battery died. After moving the car closer to the hose, I wasn`t able to restart it. Got it jumped, but also ordered grandma a brand new Exxide AGM. The current battery is 3 year old stock and very corroded. Wanna make sure grandma is ready to hit the road without worry, and a quality AGM battery should do the trick.

All told, was able to knock this out in about 5 hours... Thanks for looking!

Nice work man! It always feel good to clean up a loved ones car - doesn`t it? :)

It does! Honoring my grandfather and doing something to help my grandmother at the same time. Can`t beat that.

I would have been crying the whole time. Made me tear up just remembering my Grandfather who passed almost 20 years ago. I wish he could have lived forever. Sorry for your loss.

jrock645- Sorry to hear about your grandfather. That was a great thing to do, getting it all squared-away for your grandmother, sure glad the battery issue didn`t crop up when *she* was using the car.
