Salutations,

`

Wish I could say the summer detail season went *as planned* but it didn`t. `I always `aim high, miss low` regarding my goals but the past few months were indeed tough. `

`

Anyway, this Z/28 was the bright spot of my summer.

<p style="text-align:center;">`

`

`

Regarding the car, the owner recently acquired this very nice `69 Camaro Z/28 from a local Chevrolet store that specializes in aftermarket muscle car parts and vehicle sales. `Personally, a 1969 Z/28 Camaro is my all-time favorite car, no question about it. `And while I really enjoyed looking at and working on this one... the owner and I are not 100% sure the car is a real Z/28. `For one, it was built at one of the Chevrolet assembly plants in California, so that means there is no X33 or X77 code on the trim tag, ultimately verifying the car as a Z. `Secondly, the engine, although fairly equipped with the correct Winters intake and other correct items... it`s not 302 cubic inches. `The dealer clearly made known the engine is 350ci.

`
<p style="text-align:center;">https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2948/15233757098_2fd5026329_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pd9Zfs)
<p style="text-align:center;">Disguised as a DZ 302, this 350 SBC dons traditional Z/28 garb via the double hump heads, 780cfm Holley, and Winters`Foundry`aluminum intake. `Engine compartment was fairly clean upon arrival. `Just a quick wipe down with ONR and elimination of some polish residue from previous "Cut `n Buff."
<p style="text-align:center;">`

` And looking at the stamp pad on the passenger`s `revealed an absence of a engine code indicating the 350 block had most likely been decked to true up the surfaces prior to machining for rebuild. `The correct code would have ended in DZ (MO for service replacement) along with the correct casting dates and casting numbers on the block. `Lastly, I get conflicting information regarding the 4 gauge cluster in the center console... apparently, they were an option. `This car was absent of them. `I could also tell, from paint chips in the jambs that the previous color was a metallic blue... so the Daytona Yellow, Tuxedo Black are custom to the car. `(Did not check trim tag for original color code.) `Either way, the interior, engine, and undercarriage of the car revealed the recent builder tried to complete a tasteful restoration. The paint was just never finished and that was my job.

<p style="text-align:center;">After.
<p style="text-align:center;">Care has to be taken in jamb areas of any original or re-painted muscle car. `These spaces typically contain some portion of failing paint or`cracking`as can be seen near the rubber`door bumper in the above photo. `One poorly chosen move or unthoughtful wipe and it could be a disaster. `Focusing on the task at hand is crucial.

<p style="text-align:center;">You get the point... it was everywhere. `And I tracked it down systematically around the car and removed it.

Where I dropped the ball on the original inspection...

After I performed a test spot on the black stripes, I then made my way to the vertical panels and yellow. `As I was inspecting the lower half of the passenger`s rear quarter... I notice what looked like base coat with no clear in some areas. `When I really looked at it... the painter`s helper or whomever never removed the sanding marks... nor the orange peel they were after. `There were still peaks and valleys... and that`s why the paint on some of the lower portions of all the yellow panels appeared dull. ` Lucky me. `I then knew it was going to be a 3 step on the yellow panels as well. `Out came the old Makita/ wool/ M100. `I didn`t capture the defects because A.) I didn`t really try because I knew right then I blew my estimate by a mile `B.) I`m not that good of a photographer `C.) I would be hard pressed to meet my turnaround time.

`
<p style="text-align:center;">https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3927/15233923627_972cbf2f1c_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pdaQKD)
<p style="text-align:center;">This photo is really the only view I have of the condition of the yellow base color. `As you can easily see, the body line, mid-panel on the rear quarter tells a partial story of why the sanding marks and orange peel were never completely removed. `Using reason, I assume the painter/ painter`s help knew the angle of the panel would not be a major light reflector, so the customer would never see nor really notice and left said defects because it made the cost of the job less. `Or they simply could not/ did not see the defects when trying to finish the paint.

After Shots....Final Comments

There were a few deep, isolated scratches that remained, however they could have been counted on a set of hands and toes. `Customer was thrilled and that`s what ultimately matters. `

`

For the record, I don`t know what is up with my camera on my phone. `Apparently it is having problems dealing with sunlight because I`ve noticed it leaving "blobs" and it appears as white specs near the "blobs"... especially on black. `I was using my camera phone in place of my old Canon point and shoot (although it does have a few manual settings) because my camera phone simply kills it in picture quality!

Awesome car! Detailed a Hugger Orange one (numbers matching, chambered exhaust) and honestly, I`d rather have a clone (like this one probably is) with a 350. More torque and if you blow up part of the drivetrain it`s no big deal, at least concerning value and numbers matching condition.`

`

Great job bringing the finish back!`

Scott, thank you for the kind words!

`

Certainly, a clone is more practical and the 350 will be more user friendly with `in town` driving. `I think the Trans-Am type cars, from all manufacturers during the `69 model year, are just plane cool. `Unique engines.... in a unique package... unique RPO codes... just cool stuff was going on.

`

Best,
