Hi

For headlight restoration, I have read description to clean and clay the surface before sanding.

There are decontamination products, such as ironx which i think are intended for painted surfaces.

Is there any need for decontamination with headlight restoration, or is cleaning / clay enough before sanding? What would be appropriate products

No need to decontaminate, just clean them good and start sanding. As soon as you hit them with sandpaper you`re going to take off any surface contamination in the first few strokes. I usually just give them an APC wipedown and start sanding, never had an issue after a couple hundred lights.

Keep in mind that when sanding down a headlight lense, you are removing (what`s left) of the coating that keeps it from fading. It`s pretty easy to grind down and brighten up the lense, but the key is to apply a polyuethane coating to replicate the OEM coating. If not, the light will fail quicker than ever.
