Went to a regular client’s house today to do a basic detail on a 2003 Mustang with 100k miles on it. Client buys local vehicles, has me pretty them up, then sells them. He is not paying nor asking for perfection, so generally my mindset is provide the best possible result in the least amount of time.

Interior of this mustang was pretty rough. My assistant did a nice detail on it while I started on the outside.

I was going to just do a 1 step polish on this mustang but after doing a wash and clay decided to do a 1 pass compound over the whole thing before polish. What a great opportunity to try HD Cut! I was using my PCXP on Speed 6 for most of the compounding, would slow down on edges, etc.

Started out with a LC and Optimum MF pad and didn’t like it, was taking too long to get a decent defect removal, so decided to switch to a yellow HD Cut pad. Wow! One pass was removing 100% of the swirls, and at least 40-60% of the RIDS.

Before HD Cut, note that it was extremely cloudy and I was under a couple of trees. These are the best shots I could get considering I just had an LED flashlight on me. The vehicle had horrible swirls, water marks, and a decent amount of RIDS.

After 1 pass of CUT:

Initial Impressions of cut:

1. Leaves a decent amount of dust due to paint residue, you have to be really aggressive about cleaning your pad. I was cleaning it after every single pass in order to curb the dusting.

2. Easy to remove… most of the time yet, other times it seemed a little stingy. Will have to experiment more on this.

3. Levels paint FAST. I have never used a product that busts swirls faster than this.

4. Leaves a decent amount of marring. This is not a “final finish” compound. You will HAVE to follow up with it.

I followed up the CUT with HD Speed using a blue HD polishing pad, here are the final results. Keep in mind this car was ROUGH to begin with, I wish I would have had more time and light to get better pictures. I will be doing a full review on a Ram 1500 4DR next week, and will make sure to get some action shots.

My Process was:

ONR Wash

Pinnacle Clay

HD Cut

ONR Wash

HD Speed

Great review also! And great job on the car. I also really like your detailing rig, nice truck and trailer :). I need to get something better then a minivan..but it does get good gas mileage and was free!

Looks great!!! And thanks for taking the time to post your technique. When you say "one pass" did you mean one "section pass" with multiple vertical and horizontal passes or did you literaly mean just one pass over the paint?

I could have clarified that better. To me one pass means one section pass, usually one vertical, one horizontal, slow speed. If I`m working with a polish with longer working times I might work the product a bit longer.

Thanks!! I`ve always thought that one vertical is one pass, one horizontal is one pass so a total of two passes, but that`s still pretty remarkable for just one vertical and one horizontal pass to each section.
