View Full Version : What happens as car care products oxidize on car`s surface?

Evaporator

A couple month ago I tested how much of the "stuff" in Optimum spray wax and Opti-Clean isn`t water.

At the time, it smelled pleasant. The test sample was put aside and forgotten. When I found it today, I was surprised to find it smells like rancid cooking oil and just like cooking oil on kitchen surfaces, it turned rancid smelling and turned darker. The yellow color is much stronger now than it was when I posted here:

This is the non-volatile residues from evaporating a whole ounce in a closed cup. I would suspect this reaction happens much faster in real life on a car as the surface area is much larger. In 3-4 months, it turned foul smelling and turned yellow.

So what would happen to surface protection and how does it affect subsequent applications as products oxidize onto cars?

On plates, oxidized oil does not come off readily with regular wash cycle. It must be washed with caustics to remove it all.
