View Full Version : Extreme bonded contamination

This work truck for a roofing company had severe industrial contamination. The employee responsible for the vehicle had tried to wash it and didn’t even make a dent in it. This is perhaps the most extreme example I have come across.

The blue color is from my canopy.

It appeared that the truck was parked at a job site close enough to catch the shavings from grinding. Once those specks of metal sat overnight in in a light rain they rusted and bonded with the paint. While this is an extreme example, the same thing happens to every vehicle on some level. When a vehicle is not washed and protected regularly the contaminants that settle on the paint can and will undergo a chemical reaction and become bonded to and stain the paint.

I wish I’d had some Iron X at the time. Since it is a work truck the goal was just to remove the contamination and seal/protect it. I always keep my old clay for use on wheels or situations like this. No sense wasting a good piece of clay. I had a lot of Clay Magic blue clay, so that is what I used even though it probably was a bit mild for this purpose. I used a mix of Meguiar’s gold class shampoo and ONR as lube and probably the equivalent of 4 bars (400 grams) of clay.

I usually clay a car in about 30 minutes. 30 minutes on this truck didn’t even get me through half of the hood. It took about 3 hours to clay the whole thing.

Here is a 50/50 of the progress on the hood. At the far left you can see the edge of the piece of clay and how dirty it is after less than 25% of the hood.

The same spot in the sun. Probably the worst Sun shot I’ve ever taken, but it shows the result . :inspector: Sorry, I couldn`t get the fly to come back for a reference point.

the before pics of the hood remind me of slate or marble counter tops?!

results are very impressive. How did your hands, finger tips, wrists, forearms feel the next day after 3hrs of clay barring? :)

I would have used, as mentioned above, a clay block and Iron X or equivalent. Finish kares decon kit would also be great.

Who needs a gym membership?:chuckle:

I should point out this was another past detail, about a year ago. I don`t recall exactly how I felt, but I`m sure I was a little sore.

I don`t know exactly when Iron X came out, but I had just learned about its existence when I did this truck and hadn`t had a chance to try it yet. I didn`t feel like postponing the job to test a product that I wasn`t sure was going to help. In hindsight, I absolutely would have waited.

I second this. I think you wouldve needed gallons worth of IX instead of the FK system.

That truck looks nice and white except those small rocker panels on the doors? Is that a reflection or something?

The plastic rails were very sun-baked, dehydrated and stained to look orange. I tried a test spot and found that improvement could be achieved, but for the time and money it would take they could replace them. Being a work truck that wasn`t a priority at the time.

Oh ok that`s cool, probably easier for him to just replace them when he sells it if he does. You did a great job with that terrible contamination.
