Meguirs Solo burgundy/ yellow wool pads

Newbie question but should these pads be used one after another or seperatly, the burgandy is a heavy cutting pad and the yellow a light cut.Also when would be ideal to use a light buffing pad instead of a heavy one? Would it not be a good idea to use after color sanding? Just trying to find the best way to end up with the minimal amount of swirls possible.
