Cleaning and conditioning unsealed leather (like Ford F150 King Ranch)

I`m looking for some pointers as the best way to clean and copndition undealed leather. Would you use your normal routine as you would with top coated leather? And then condition with something like Lexol or would you go a completely different route? I`ve only experienced it once, and cleaninng with simply water on a MF towel took off anything that was on there since they were very clean already. I`m just worried i`ll see it again and they won`t be as clean.
