Is this a safe method:

if not, can anyone recommend a better route?

I get great results with 2000 wet sandpaper, then 2500 paper, then megs 105 compound applied with my rotary and 4" cutting pad, then megs 205 polish with a polishing pad.

I`ve heard good things about both the 3M kits and the Mother`s kits. I think the 3M is for more badly hazed lamps. I used the 3M kit on my E39 BMW lamps that were terrible and they came out great!

I would start with 1000 grit for yellowed lights. If you want to take out rock dings, I`d use 600 first.
I dunno about the M3 but if it has tinted lenses the tint will disappear.
