What is in the paint in this car?

From my recent thread (http://www.autopia.org/forum/click-brag/131598-my-recent-details-lots-pics-wrx-s2k-genesis-evo-x-gmc-sierra-drag-transam.html#post1399181) of my recent details I had a drag Trans Am that sat in/at a chassis for over a year.



I did a wash/clay/wash and followed up that with a bunch of polishes, nothing took the paint blemishes out. Meg #83, Menzerna IF/FPII and even 3M Rubbing Compound, nothing got the spots out of the paint. The paint got brighter and deeper, but it wasn`t perfect.

I know it`s hard to see in those last pics, but trust me, the blemish is still there.



What would:



a) cause this

b) remove this

I`ve seen damage to clearcoat like that from a very light amount of brake fluid being put onto the paint from mechanics/fingers accidentally. Heavier compounding MAY be able to get it out depending on how deep it goes.

Interesting. I don`t think that it was break fluid, because the blemish in the paint was on the entire pass side, from the spoiler to the front bumper and only on the cuvred surface on the paint. The vertical panels were fine.

a. Looks like it`s the beginning of clear coat failure....a few possible reasons, one of them being over buffing in the past. The curved upper surface will see more direct UV exposure than the sides.

I agree that it does look like the beginning of clear coat failure. One way you may be able to determine this is through a paint thickness guage. See if it is an extremely low reading.

I don`t have a paint thickness gauge, but I will definately look into getting one and I will pass on the info to the owner.
