Client got a hold of me for his new acquired 2005 BMW X5. His main concerns were the swirls all over the paint. He also wanted some light interior work to be done but stated his main focus was going to be the paintwork. He wasn’t looking for perfection but after the dealer got a hold of it and what looked like a few too many trips to the local swirl-o-matic the paint was in need of a good polish to get rid of the marring and dull state it left the paint in.

The process: Exterior-

• Pre-treat and wash with Meg’s Hyperwash.

• Decontaminate and clay bar with Purple clay and Meg’s Quick Detailer.

• Rims Cleaned with p21s wheel gel.

• IPA wipe down to insure any old protection was removed.

• Danase Swirl Abolisher II swirl removing product with the Makita and Orange 5.5” pad

• IPA wipe down for inspection

• Meg’s 205 with the Meg’s G110 v.1 and blue LC pad

• Wipe Down

• Menzerna Micro Polish PO 85RD Final polish with the G110 v.1 and finishing LC Pad

• Final IPA wipe down before Sealant.

• Sealed with Menzerna Powerlock Paint Sealant.

• Windows with Stoners Invisible Glass

• Rubber and trim protected with Meg’s Hyperdressing

• Rims sealed with DP’s Max Wax.

Interior

• Vacuumed and Boars Hair brushed Carpeting

• Plastic Cleaned with Meg’s APC+citrus 10:1 ratio

• Plastic treated with HD’s Protect

• Leather conditioned with Surf City’s Leather conditioner

I brought my right hand man in detailing these days Martyn. He’s straight over from across the pond in England. Which worked out great in this instance because the owner of the BMW just moved over here from England just a little while ago as well. Listening to these two chat it up was about as entertaining as it gets for me. Here’s Martyn using the guzzler waffle weave after the last rinse.

After the wash and decontamination we made sure to get a good IPA wipe down to get a real reveal on what was going on with the paint. The clouds were thick and grey. No rain but nasty overcast made it a little difficult picking up the defects.

In fact the only real good pic I got showing just what was going on was a 50/50 on the rear bumper. The entire vehicle was basically the same way, just dull and lifeless from too many automatic car washes and Dealers getting their hands on it.

So I got to work on getting the paint back in shape. First up the Makita and some Danase’s Swirl Abolisher II. I was able to get the results I was after with longer work times over the Meg’s 105 in my test panel. I’m still having an issue with 105 flashing on me with the rotary. So go with what works.

While I was on the paint work Martyn got busy on getting the Interior back in shape.

Another IPA check and then on to the G110 and some 205 to get a nice level finish.

After Martyn got the interior set he worked on the rims and tires. Some P21s Gel got them clean. I don’t really think I needed to use it to get it perfect but I’ve been wanting to test it out on various rims since I’ve gotten it. After they were cleaned he went ahead and put a good coat of wax on them with DP’s Max Wax. I still really like this stuff for a nuba.

After the 205 and an IPA wipe I went over everything with Menzerna’s PO RD85. This came as a recommendation from RickRack. I think it’s a great substitute for Ultrafina Se really. Gave me that final look I really wanted from this metallic blue paint. Then the Last IPA wipe to make sure the marring was all gone and the “Pop” factor was indeed there. (didn’t chase any RIDS on this one as he knew it’s a 6 y/o car and he could live with them) Then I tossed on the Sweet spearmint smelling Menzera’s Power Lock Paint sealant. I’m still up in the air on this one. I like it but I’m not sure if I like more than BFWD. I think it’ll come down to the durability like everyone else’s opinion on it so it seems.

So Martyn got the chore of getting all the product off on final wipe down with a big fluffy gold towel.

Then it was time to get the Q-tips out and make sure all the crevices we’re Kosher and clean as well.

Some after Reflection shots (as good as I could get with the cloudy day)

Then we pulled it out onto the street for a little better lighting

We handed out a few cards of people in the Building wanting us to come back and get their vehicles done. I hope it sunny so I can come back and take some bright sun shots on this one. The first thing the owner did was grab his camera and start snapping pics to send to his buddy’s. Defiantly a fun color to work with. As always thanks for reading.

Great work, was the clearcoat pretty hard, or soft?

The clear on this was actually a bit harder than I`ve seen on the cars. It corrected easily enough once I got the right combo down. But the cars seem to be easier to correct.

LOL Gianni.. I actually hardly ever grab for it anymore. I`ve had a couple of gelcoats to work on recently that I used it on. For the most part I`ve been switching it up like everyone else and sticking with the D/A for a lot of the work. If it`s a harder clear I still grab the makita first just because I can work it faster than the D/A. I`m going to step up to the new version of the G110 here soon though. Just kind of waiting on this one to crap out on me first. Or a really good deal comes along. I`ve thought about selling off the Dewalt a couple of times now but I just know as soon as I do there`s going to be some boat or something that I`m going to wish I had it for. Always happens when I sell off equipment.
