I`ve read about people that hard wire a new power cord into their PC, and now I know why. I did a test on the tailgate of my truck last night in which I needed the extension cord and the motor in the PC was getting very warm. After, I did a test section on my wife`s car, which was close enough to an outlet not to need the cord. Motor was quite a bit cooler and the motor seemed to have a little more umph. I know the principles behind why this happens, but I`d like to know what size cord everyone is using when they hardwire? Currently, using a 16awg exterior cord. Thanks.

Autogeeks sells an "HD" version where they solder on a 16gauge 25ft cord

The HD model has a heavy duty 16 gauge, 25 foot power cord hardwired into the polisher. The longer cord is more convenient than an extension cord and it is gauged to deliver maximum power to the polisher for safe, efficient operation.

Porter cable 7424xp, 7424xp, Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher, Porter Cable polisher, car polisher, buffer, sander-polisher (http://www.autogeek.net/porter-cable-7424xp.html)

So I`d guess 16.

Use at least a 14ga....12ga if you can. I used a 16 for a while and the 7424 kept shutting down. It simply will stop working after a while. It`s all about the extension cord.

Yeah, IIRC the PC`s manual even specifies what gauge of cord to use, based in part upon how long it is.

Griot`s uses 18 ga. on their standard 10` cord. If you upgrade to the 25` cord, it`s 16 ga. Auto geek uses 16 ga. on their 25` upgrades.
