Hi gang,

My apologies if this has been covered, I`ve searched quite extensively, and no thread suggests any type of DIY fix.

In any case, I`ve got a set of the following rims, and all 4 came with corrosion on the machined lip. The rim itself is aluminum, so I`d assume the lip itself is aluminum as well.

Are there any DIY steps to fixing it? These are my track rims, so I`m not too afraid of salt getting to it, and the end result doesn`t need to be 100% either.

Would I be able to sand it down with say, 1500-->2000, and then repolish with OHC-->OP?

Any concerns with the bare aluminum (protected by say, Collinite 845?)

Thanks!

post up some pictures if possible so we can see the extent of the damage.

Here they are: On all 4 rims, 2 more extensive than the others.

Can anyone offer me some tips? Salvageable?

Bump, is this doable with wetsanding and polish? (I`ve got the entire Optimum arsenal and IP/FP106ff)

Those rims look like they have a clear coat on that section, do this first. Get some polish and a clean rag, wipe that area and tell me if it comes back black...they will tell me if they are clear or not

Zephyr Pro 40 is one the best site for any metal polishing.

Should`ve added: I`ve tried polishing them with both OHC and OP, and while the visible chrome becomes brighter, the `rough` patch is more or less the same.

Gracais.

did the rag turn black? that`s the important part for me

I don`t recall the color of OHC or OP, but no, there was no excessive `sweating of black` as when polishing bare metal. (Like when polishing the back of an ipod)

Thanks again!

Then that tells me that the rims have a clear coat on them and its not in just the metal..it looked that way to me in the pics.

Not a lot can be done with chipped clear unless you have them re-cleared

Understood. Are there drawbacks of just sanding all the clear off, and polishing the bare metal?

Going to need constant maintenance just like an exhaust tip. Only a lot worse since it sees brake dust. I would definitely look into some sort of clearcoat or sealant.

i`ll see if i can find it but there is something i seen recently that is can be used to clear rims and stuff.

You will probably need to sand it really well and then possibly take it to a good auto body shop and have them clear it. That might be a way to do it

These are my `fun` rims, so I doubt I`ll clear them.

So long as its like the maintenance of an exhaust tip after I wetsand and buff, then that`ll suite me just fine.

Thanks!

Any recommendations as to which polish I should get? (must be from eshine). I already have the normal OP/OHC/IP/106ff for my buffers (rotary and PC).

I have another post in this section with the selection at hand.
