Hi all,

I am new to detailing and going on the advice of my brother, purchased a huge cartload of stuff from autogeek for detailing.

I read all instructions, watched you tube videos, and then went to work today. After spending 5 hours between washing, clay baring and attempting to wax, I`m a bit disappointed.

I washed with Armor All Wash, then did Meguiar`s Clay Bar.

From there, I applied Meguiar`s 105 to a lake county CCS 4" orange pad. I used a PC 7424, I worked in a nice small box size area, about 20x20. I did this area for about two minutes. Started on 3, then went up to 6 for the actual work.

Then I worked over the whole hood of the car in the same fashion.

Next, I used Meguiar`s 205 on a lake county CCS 4" white pad. Again, worked in small box, did area. A lot of the spider web type scratches were gone. I was very impressed they were gone.

However, I noticed new, large swirl marks all over the hood of the car, seemingly caused by the Porter Cable 7424. All the tiny scuffs were gone, but the large swirls were new and horribly noticeable. I went over the entire process again with 105/205, more pressure with no improvement.

Then I tried to use the sealant on a blue pad hoping it would fix it--it didn`t.

It`s on a 2008 Honda Accord Coupe with Black paint.

Here is a link to photos during my work. (the swirls you see aren`t leftover wax, they are the actual coat of the car reflecting the sun, they look white)

The rest of the photos show the work I did just on the hood. The side panels show what it looked like before. You can enlarge them to full resolution to see the swirls. While not all visible from that angle, you can see only the ones where the sun is hitting, but trust me--there`s a ton more.

I`m wondering whether I`m doing something wrong, using the wrong products, what? I`m very disappointed with the results, not sure if my hood is now damaged.

Any advice and information is very appreciated, in advance. I can purchase any products to help with this if necessary, if something else would work better.

Thanks,

Nick

Welcome Nick, you have come to the right place. I have experienced the same thing and have been working on improving my skills. Here is my thread, it might give you some ideas.

There are a lot of good members on here that should be able to help you figure it out.

The second picture actually looks like some pigtails, and the last picture looks like scratches from wiping off the residue.

My suggestion would be this. Make sure your pads are clean and are cleaned periodically throughout the polishing process. I would also make sure that you prime your pads prior to use, so you are not using a bone dry pad on the surface. Work in "out of sun" area and in a cool spot..assuring the finish is also cool to the touch.

As far as the Porter Cable itself, make sure that depending on the pad size you are using, that you use the counterweight (if applicable). Also, do not apply so much pressure that the pad stops spinning when polishing (which is where I believe your pigtails are coming from.) Do not apply too much polish and make sure that you break the polish down completely before removing. After spreading the product, I move left to right, move down a tad, and move right to left (overlapping the above movement). Then I move up and down and then down and up (again, overlapping the previous movement). As the product begins to break down, lighten the pressure and slow the speed.

The streaks may be from a dirty MF. Make sure that you are using a good quality, clean MF. I prefer the edgeless MF towels, however, there are many other good quality one`s out there. I spritz the surface with 50% IPA first prior to wiping lightly to remove any polishing residue. Although, there are some finishes that no matter how careful you are, they are just finicky and scratch like mad just by looking at them. These are the finishes that you want to polish out and wipe as little as possible. Hope these tips help.

^^^^^ Wait,

I`m confused as this is really the first time i`ve heard of using the counter weight?

i`ve always been under the impression that the counterweight is not needed for light polish jobs for the DIY type of guy (excluding professionals)

what are the general thoughts on counter weight usage? when to use, when not to use?

I use the Menzerma polishes if that helps.

Could of been the 105 or 205 drying up? I read on a thread of someone getting RIDS after using a DA and were told to mist some water on the pad instead of adding more.

The counter weight is installed on the machine under the backing plate. There are two different ones that correspond to the backing plate you`re using. They should always be installed.

Not having the counter weight makes the machine vibrate.

Those microfibers look like the ones that you can get from costco and if those are them i wouldn`t use those on any paint yet alone on Soft Honda Black Paint.

A lot of those scratches appear to be from the removal of the product used.

Also as mentioned remember to work out of the sun and make sure to not only prime the pads but make sure to work the product in until it has completely broke down.
