I was googling around the web and noticed an interesting trick. Apparently, it was something they mentioned on Car Talk years ago. You put a piece of deodorant soap under your car seat and it acts as an air freshener. I just saw a brief reference to it on this thread: Click (http://ask.metafilter.com/90098/Alternative-Air-Freshener-for-My-Car).

Does anyone know if there`s a reason the poster specifically mentioned deodorant soap? It could have been incidental. Or, there`s some substance in certain soaps that don`t just cover up smells with another more pleasant one, but actually deodorize the air?

I`d think a deodorizing soap would be designed such that if you lather something up with it, like your body, that would be when it does it`s deodorizing. But, would it deodorize the air around it? Like you would want in a car air freshener?

Reason I ask is I`ve got a neighbor that makes homemade soap that I love the way it smells. I was thinking about using that instead, but since I`d be surprised if she puts any special kind of deodorant in it, maybe it won`t work as well?

I also go with the Renuzit Odor Killer in the cup holder, works for me and adjustable all you have to do is reach down and pull the top up,no overbearing fragrance.Id pass on the soap,I wouldn`t want a car smelling like deodorant or soap.
