This car just came back from a detail shop - it was done for a dealership and I was asked what I thought of the finish because the other "detailer" said that he would have to sand the whole car in order to improve the finish.

Doesn`t look too bad in this picture.

Here is that lovely Jet Black paint showing its true colors

So intead of giving my opinion, I suggested that I do a 50/50 and let the dealership decide what to do about the car.

I don`t know thomas the marring is gone and it looks a lot better but there`s still a ton of orange peel in that deck lid... apples to apples you made it a 1000 x`s better though.

You miss understand it. They wanted to sand the car to get rid of the swirls. Not the orange peel. The paint has a milky look to it as well that you can`t see in these pictures.

I am for the first time going to do wholesale work. :D

I`ll correct this car as soon as they repaint the hood. (it has some dents in it that needs to be dealt with)

Too bad 99 times out of 100 the dealer will be able to convince people that is how cars look when they get detailed. :(

Looks a lot better, Jet Black is the WORST color to own :(

Awesome Thomas.

I do that all the time with the tape. Works everytime!

What did you use? UNO? Pat said you use it a lot and like it.

I cringe whenever I get contacted to polish out a jet black BMW. I know I`m in for a long day, plus having to explain to the customer why it is going to cost so much.

That`s very damn sad. I`ve ALWAYS wanted to know what these people actually use to cause so much swirls. Honestly, it amazes me. I couldn`t even create those swirls even if I tried hard enough.

The most swirl inducing compound I`ve used is Duragloss, and its NOWHERE near as bad as this. I`d imagine that these "hacks" use the traditional Meguiar`s M85 compound, and have failed to break them down. But failure to break down the compounds would not have instilled some deep scratches. I figured that they did not clay or even WASH the vehicle prior to compounding. This is ridiculous. For ****s sakes.

So tell me, does anybody know how these jerk-offs manage to do such horrible damage to the clear coat? Because I really have no clue.

The biggest culprit is 1 dirty wash water with dirty wash mitts full of sand and contaminants and then the 2nd is using dirty contaminated wool pads with cheap filler products. Seriously most dealerships are lucky if they change their wash water more than once a day and wash their pads more than once a week. They think spuring them out with a screwdriver every now and then is perfectly acceptable. And then they use the cheap filler products to hide it so they don`t see what you`re talking about when you complain.

Im not exaggerating when I say this...

Take a 10 year old wool pad thats never been washed, only cleaned out with a screwdriver; some meguiars #7 (or a similarly oil heavy product) , and go to town.

But do all that after you`ve washed the car with a cactus :P

Well, most dealer work is by a bunch of hacks so I don`t really feel bad when it happens to dealerships. A knowledgeable dealership with good staff should know the proper methods...we`ve all received the "our service dept is one of the best in the state and we`ve been honored X times by the company president" when we go to buy cars.

I feel bad for the folks who are trying to keep up their vehicles and get taken by a bad detailing shop/person. Just like we have with home renovation, marketing dept`s have given the impression that anyone with a mf towel, a PC, and some polish can detail just like the pros.

I go into detail shops and body shops and I see a rotary laying wool pad down in the dust or dirty. Other pads just laying around looking YEARS old. This is where the swirls come from.
