Autozone is running a special on 5 quarts of German Castrol 0w-30 bundled with a K&N oil filter for, IIRC, $27.99 plus tax. This is some of the best oil on the market and isn`t very easy to find on sale, snatch it up while you still can.

How many petro-based 0W30 oils are there?

Very good product, it`s a shame they`re pairing it with a K&N product...perhaps they`d do a swap.

The 0W30 is an excellent product and towards the thick end of the xW30 visco range. It meets many Euro mfr specs. I haven`t seen it around for a while.

Hell, even if you throw the filter away, that`s a pretty good price.

Are K&N oil filters that bad? I usually use Pure 1 (Toyota), Motorcraft (Ford) or Mann (Audi). Any ideas if K&N is comparable to these?

K & N is one of best flowing oil filters on the market. They are built like a tank and are very highly regarded.

Castrol 0w30 is probably the best synthetics available in retail stores. Castrol 0w30(aka GC for german castrol) is a real synthetic(base IV) unlike most other "synthetics" on the market like the other syntecs and mobil 1 oils that are a base III.

Even though it is rated a 30 weight at operating temperature, it is closer to a 40 weight.

good stuff, i run it.

I`m gonna first apologizefor the stupid question ...

I have been hearing for years about the german castrol being better than Mobil 1. Is 0w-30 the only german castrol sold in the states??

I have a northstar engine that is extremely sensitive to oil and the only oil that keeps the top end quiet is the 10w-30. I used Mobil 1 0w-30 once and I had to chance it after a 250 miles because the top end was really loud.

the 10w and 0w only reflect on when the engine is cold, other wise it shouldnt be of too much concern.

the mobil 1 0w30 is quite a bit thinner than the castrol 0w30 so it might be worth a try :nixweiss

i just quoted you to link the ad.. the rest was more or less for those who were unaware of how special the one type of castrol is.

the first few oil changes i used it with had the goofy lookin green stuff.. but not anymore

That "goofy looking green stuff" was the original formula, the newer formula is golden in color, while not exactly as good as the original but primo none the less compared to a lot of oils. Every bottle I own is the green which is long gone in most places, every once in a grey moon I may score a bottle or two on a shelf hidden, in fact, I heard a certain autozone on pass rd had some on their shelf since I see your from GP MS neighbor. ;-)
